Review: The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

For a long while I was a subscriber to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine when it was in paper form.  This year they went digital and I did not renew.  I didn't want to be stuck to my computer reading something I used to dog ear and drag with me everywhere.  I loved it.  I just got offered a chance to review the magazine that is now free to read online.  I didn't know that it had become free and I was excited!  You can read more reviews on the Schoolhouse Reviews page I began reading The Old Schoolhouse Magazine's November issue and like I thought it wasn't easy for me to do.  I was a little discouraged and then I realized that it would be great if I could read it on my Ipod while I was sitting in the living room or in my room before bed.  I quickly searched for an app in the Itunes store and found it and guess what?  It's free too!  I am in love again!  I have this thing where I have to read everything in order I know it's strange but I have always done it that way except when standing in line at the grocery store where I just flip to the article that caught my attention.  This time I once again read it in order.  There is an option online where you can click any article on the front page and it'll take you to it which is really nice.  Otherwise you just click on the arrows at the top of the page to turn them.  You can also zoom in and out on a page.

Here's what it looked like on my laptop.  You can see the arrows at the top and the side bar you can catch a glimpse of has a list of the articles and you can click on them to be taken to that particular one.  You can also select a page next to the arrows at the top.  You can also print, download, or share it!

Once I began to read I noticed on some articles that it's interactive.  I clicked on one that allowed me to meet the Lott family and see inside their homeschool room and day.  I really love this feature!  She showed us her workboxes which I have heard of but haven't seen in action and now I'm thinking that I might want to do it that way!  I loved seeing all the books in her room I told my mother I didn't have to many :) I don't feel so bad about the ones I do have now!

The articles themselves really connected with me.  Some of them were an answer to the struggles I'm facing.  There's one called Refuse to be a Victim: Avoid the Self-Pity Trap  where I found a quote that I just loved "....Most heroes aren't born; they're cornered' that is so true!  It's been a rough few years for my family as you all know and this article just called to me to use what I have and to get up and get going.  She gives some bullet points asking you what your doing with things in your life and she also talks about being a ten talent family.  I'd love to be a ten talent family how about you?  This is something that I feel like we really need to work on.

I found something interesting every article but if I wrote about each one I'd be pages and pages into this post.  There is so much information packed into this magazine I'm reminded just why I loved it so much and the content in the digital version isn't lacking at all!  The theme this month seemed to be thankfulness, using your talents to help and to get things done, and everyday heroes with articles on different people, art, music, memorization and other teaching helps.

I must also say that the ads are right on.  They are relevant and on a few you see a video and you can click on some of them for more information.  (or maybe it was all of them?  I just clicked on the ones that interested me and I saw a video for.)

I would definitely recommend this to any of my homeschool moms but also those moms that like to do some more learning with their children when they get home from school.

If you'd like to read it and check it out please click on any of the links above and enjoy!  I'll add another link here at the bottom just in case.  Also share with me what you liked about it and if you'd read it whether your  a homeschool mom or not.

Have a great day!
